Bluefin Sport Premier Intermediate League
Donegal Celtic 3 – Glenholmes, Murray, McVarnock
Moyola Park 2 – Rafferty, McCann
Moyola Park travelled to Suffolk Road to take on Donegal Celtic on a cold and wet Saturday afternoon hoping to get back to winning ways after a going out of the Irish cup with a 4-0 defeat to Ballymena Utd last weekend.
Both teams started off pretty strong in the first few minutes of the game. The first big chance came from the visitors 9 minutes into game when Moyola Park’s Rafferty was brought down inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot awarding Moyola a penalty. Rafferty stepped up and finished calmly to put the visitors in front just under 10 minutes in. Moyola continued to push forward with their second goal coming 25 minutes into the game when McAuley picked out a great pass to McCann who took the ball past the keeper nicely and finished well extending the visitors lead to 2-0. On the half hour mark, the home side came back into the game with a great finish by Glenholmes past Moyola Park’s Farniok to make the score 2-1. Moyola started to lose possession and Donegal Celtic pushed at them each time. Coming near half time, the home side found an equaliser through a mistake from McAuley who gave the ball away in the middle of the park and Murray made a great run into the box and scored with a good strike into the top corner of the net. Minutes later, the home side’s McVarnock found the net again, scoring 2 goals inside a few minutes to put them in front after trailing 2-0. Moyola went into half time frustrated at throwing away a 2-0 lead.
Moyola came out in the second half hoping to gain a little possession and get back into the game. They pushed at Donegal Celtic and had a few chances but nothing got past Donegal Celtic’s keeper. With 15 minutes remaining of the game, Moyola were awarded a free kick just outside the 18 yard box. The visitors hoped to get something from this which would get them back into the game but Rafferty’s shot went slightly high over the bar. The game at Suffolk road finished 3-2 to the home side.
