Moyola Park kicked off their 18/19 season of the Bluefin Sport Premier Intermediate League with an away game to Newington Football Club at Solitude, Belfast.
Moyola had several new faces on display in their opening game, with Michael Tolan, Mark Kelly and Ryan Curry making their first competitive appearances after signing for the Castledawson club over the summer break.
The match started off well for the Park as they held Newington FC at bay while managing to have attempts at the Newington net, coming close to leading the game.
However, at 17 mins, Newington FC went ahead through a Padraig Scollay goal.
Moyola were able to stop Newington FC for the rest of the half before the match ended for half-time. Upon returning for the second half, there were no changes made by the Moyola team.
Within seven minutes of the return, Newington FC scored their second through Kevin Hughes who also scored the third on 82 minutes.
Moyola fought hard for every ball and every tackle but they were unable to stop Robbie McVarnock scoring on 87 minutes, leaving the final score at 4-0.
Speaking after the game, Moyola manager Mervyn Pattison said, “This was a disappointing performance today, we never got started. We hope to have a few of the injured lads back before our next match against Linfield.
“There are a couple of suspensions that have been cleared up now as well so we will kick on. There are no excuses, though, as today we were not good enough.”
Next up for Moyola is a massive game against Linfield in the second round of the League Cup on August 28.
