Tennent’s Irish Cup
Crewe United 2 – Scannell, Curley
Moyola Park 1 – Rafferty
Moyola Park travelled to Crewe Park to take on Crewe Utd in the 2nd round of the Tennents Irish Cup. Moyola were hoping to continue their winning streak after two good victories last Saturday and Tuesday night.
The home side started off the stronger side, creating a lot of threat for the visitors. However, Moyola held in there and ensured they kept the score line at 0-0. Half an hour into the game, Beggs was brought down inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot awarding a penalty to the visiting team. Rafferty stepped up and took the penalty well to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
With 5 minutes to go until half time, the visitors saw themselves down to 10 men after Moyola Park’s McIlhatton was shown a straight red which the visiting supporters thought was a harsh decision. This changed the game big time on the edge of half time.
Crewe United came out in the second as the stronger side having the extra man. With only 5 minutes into the second half of the game, saw the visitors get an equaliser from Scannell to put the game all square again. Moyola knew they had a lot of work to do to go in front once again.
Not long after the equaliser, Moyola had a great opportunity to take the lead again through a great shot from Beggs which rattled off the post. The remainder of the second half was pretty even up until the last few minutes. With only a few minutes to go, Crewe had a corner which they knew was basically the last kick of the game. A great delivery into the box and headed into the net by Curley to put the home side 2-1 up. Moyola were disappointed with the way the game ended after taking the lead through Rafferty.
