Lurgan Celtic 0
Moyola Park 2 – Tolan (2)
Moyola Park travelled to Knockramer Park on Saturday to play Lurgan Celtic and after losing their opening two league games and not having scored a goal, they were looking to get their season up and running. Moyola Park manager started with new singing Lee Harkin and also the returning Kyle Beggs and also had Danny McIlhatton returning from injury.
Lurgan Celtic started the better of the two sides and were causing Moyola problems down their left flank with Celtic’s Andrews and McCann impressive, although the final ball was missing and hence any serious threat to the Moyola goal. Celtic had a series of corners but failed to capitalise on their early dominance and as the half wore on Moyola began to demonstrate the threat they possessed from set piece situations. With half an hour gone Moyola had a loud shout for a penalty waved away and in the follow up Celtic keeper McKerr made a superb save to divert a goal bound shot wide for a corner. From the resultant corner a powerful header looked set to give Moyola the first goal of the game but Celtic defender Andrews headed the effort over the bar for another corner. Celtic’s striker Rooney then had a penalty appeal of his own waved away before O’Reilly headed narrowly over from a corner. The game was becoming more open and chances were getting created for both sides, with Andrews latching onto another Celtic corner and firing a shot towards the top corner of the Moyola goal, but agonisingly just over. Halftime arrived scoreless.
The second period started a lot stronger for the visitors and the warning signs were there for Celtic that Moyola were going in search of all 3 points. Just over the hour mark Moyola got the goal their second half play had deserved, when a left wing run and cutback was dispatched by Michael Tolan past Celtic keeper McKerr via the aid of a slight deflection. This kick started Celtic into life and Cochrane had a header from a free kick narrowly go over, whilst a Crawford drilled effort across the face of goal also missed the target, however they lacked sustained dominance. Moyola were remaining extremely dangerous themselves and a headed effort with 10 minutes remaining should have doubled their lead, however it went over the bar. Murphy had an effort go wide following a neat interchange on the left between Crawford and substitute McAlinden, but a second goal for Moyola and Tolan arrived with time almost up, with the Celtic defence stretched McKerr made another fantastic initial save, but the follow up was put in the net to hand all three points to Moyola. Celtic were given an injury time chance of a consolation when they were awarded a penalty, but the spot kick by Lavery went over the bar.
