Moyola Park welcomed Newry City to the Mill Meadow on Saturday in a NIFL Premier Intermediate League game with the visitors winning the corresponding fixture on the opening day of the season 3-2. The home side had McAuley and Taggart in the starting eleven replacing Mullan who was on the bench and Forrest who was suspended. All present held a minutes silence for Derry City captain Ryan McBride before the game started.
The first chance of the came in the 2nd minute when Carville found Hughes and his effort was cleared by McAllister. Five minutes Carville shot straight at Farniok in the home goal. Newry continued to push forward and a ball put Carville through and McQuillan made a great last ditch tackle to deny a goal scoring opportunity. The 19th minute saw Grant find Hughes and his shot across goal hit the far post and was cleared. The home side had a chance in the 24th minute when McIlhatton saw his shot blocked by Boyle and a minute later a run from Beggs on the left saw him cut inside and shoot just over.
The visitors opened the scoring in the 29th minute when a cross on the right by McArdle was left by Johnston in the middle and Hughes came in at the back post to fire into an empty net. The 36th minute saw Hughes shoot wide for the visitors. Moyola should have equalised in the 40th minute when McIlhatton found Taggart, however his shot was straight at Gordon.
The first chance of the second half fell in the 48th minute when Carville shot straight at Farniok and three minutes later McIlhatton found Beggs on the left and as he went to cut inside to shoot, McArdle cleared for the visitors. A minute later Hughes has a close range effort saved by Farniok. The 58th minute saw a dangerous ball into the box towards the visitors Carville, cleared by McIlhatton. The first change of the game came in the 61st minute when the visitors replaced Grant with McCabe and four minutes later McIlhatton was booked for a foul on Hughes.
The home side made their first change in the 68th minute when Hassan replaced McCann and three minutes later the visitors replaced Carville with McMullan. The home side equalised in the 72nd minute when substitute Hassan fired in a free kick past Gordon from all of 30 yards. The next chance didn’t come to the 84th minute when a long ball from Gordon was just hit over by Johnston and a minute later the visitors replaced Johnston with Havern. Curran was booked for the visitors in the 90th minute and at the other end McMullan shot wide. The last action of the game saw the home side replace McAuley with Mullan.
