Match Report

Moyola Park travelled to the Showgrounds on Tuesday night to play Danske Bank Premiership leaders Coleraine in the Semi-Final of the North West Senior Cup. Moyola Park welcomed the returning McAuley into the starting line-up following suspension and Evans kept his place following his goal against Portstewart on Saturday. The home sides starting eleven was a mixture of first-team and U20’s players of which the visitors had recently defeated in the North West Craig memorial Cup.

The home created the first chance of the game on four minutes when McCready went on a surging run, but his effort failed to trouble Moyola Park’s McCauley. Coleraine thought they had taken the lead on 18 minutes, only to see McConaghie’s header cleared off the line and then shortly after McCauley was alert to deny Whiteside from a corner-kick.

Moyola Park had their best opportunity of the half on 40 minutes when Paul was afforded too much room at the edge of the area and he turned his marker before shooting wide. On the stroke of half-time, the home had a chance when Kirk found Ferris but he fired his strike over the bar. The visitor’s opened the scoring against the run of play in the 49th minute when Hudson rose unchallenged to head into the roof of the net following a corner.

Moyola doubled their lead in the 71st minute when Evans latched onto a ball into the box and he scored from an acute angle. With the game coming to a close the home side reduced the deficit in the 87th minute when Wilson scored from close range and the 90th minute saw Kirk connect with a fantastic volley to equalise and take the game into extra-time.

With the game now into extra-time it was veteran defender Douglas who scored the winner in the 112th minute when he shot past McCauley from 12 yards and this was a cruel blow to the visitors as they had fought hard and were 1 minute away from causing an upset.
