Moyola Park welcomed Portstewart to the Mill Meadow on Saturday for a Bluefin Sport Premier Intermediate League game and the home side were looking to build on last week’s Match Intermediate Cup win against St Patrick’s YM.

The first action of the game saw Quigg break on the right and his dangerous cross was held by debutant keeper Hegan. The first chance for the home side came in the 12th minute when McIlhatton found Rafferty in front of goal and he saw his effort ion goal blocked by a visiting defender. The 16th minute saw a cross on the left towards McIlhatton cleared by Bednarz in the visiting goal and the ball fell to McAllister however he fired his shot well over. Two minutes later at the other end the referee waved play on following a challenge by Hegan on the opposing striker when the visitors where calling for a penalty.

The home were forced to make a change in the 19th minute with McClure replacing the injured Doey and a minute later the visitors had a cross on the left by Forgrave which was missed by all and Steele fired his shot over when he should have hit the target. With 25 minutes on the clock an attack by Moyola saw a shot by McCann blocked and a effort on goal by McIlhatton saved by Bednarz. With just over ten minutes left before half time, McDowell brought the ball down, however his resulting shot was well over.

The 36th minute saw McCann twist and turn on the left and his ball inside found Rafferty, however his shot was wide of Bednarz’s left hand post. Two minutes later Quigg found himself free on the left and his curled shot to the back post was well wide. With five minutes left of the first half, a free kick from McAuley on the right was headed wide by McIlhatton. The 42nd minute saw McIlhatton booked for something he said to the assistant referee on the stand side. The visitors had Lindsay booked just before the break for kicking the ball away following a challenge with Forrest.

The first action of the second half saw the visitors replace Forgrave with McClements in the 49th nminute. The home side opened the scoring in the 54th minute when Rafferty fired in a free kick from outside the box into the bottom right hand corner for his 25th goal of the season. The 62nd minute saw Quigg receive the ball from the right and turn and shoot wide for the visitors. Four minutes later Law had a great shot from the edge of the box only to see it hit the back of McAuley and cleared.

The 68th minute saw a great cross field ball from McClure to McCann who found Graham through on goal and his cross was cleared by the Portstewart defence. A minute later at the same end Graham cut the ball back on the right to McIlhatton who fired his shot over. With 20 minutes left on the clock Portstewart replaced Quigg with Stewart and a minute later Rafferty found McCann and he cut inside and fired his shot wide. The home side had to make a double change in the 75th minute with Greer replacing Rafferty and Taggart replacing Forrest. The 79th minute saw a ball in from the left to Stewart and his shot on goal was deflected out for a corner. A minute later Stewart turned and shot at Hegan in the home goal. The 81st minute saw a ball straight down the middle left by McCann and McIlhatton ran through on goal and saw his effort saved by Bednarz. Two minutes later McCann saw his free kick saved by Bednarz . With six minutes left the visitors made their final change with Heneghan replacing Lindsay and a minute later Moyola Park’s Graham was shown a yellow card. The home held out for the final few minutes to claim a valuable 3 points.
