On thursday 26th April, the finals of the South Derry Primary schools 7-a-side league took place at Moyola.

On thursday 26th April, the finals of the South Derry Primary schools 7-a-side league took place and Spires Integrated were the eventual winners of the competition.  They now go forward to represent the area in the national finals, sponsored by The Sun.

In what was a scorching day at Moyola Park F.C., the 8 finalists played off in a league format with Knockloughrim P.S. and Magherafelt P.S. tied in second place and Spires Integrated finishing in pole position.

The day as a whole was a great success, and the water sponsored by the PSNI was very much required to keep cool in the heat!  The competition was very competitive but at the same time played in a sporting manner.

GDO Niall Curneen was delighted with the whole competition.  "We have had a great competition which involved 16 teams in total, and 8 teams here for the finals.  Throughout the competition all the kids have given theyre all for their respective schools, and they have behaved excellently. "

He went on to say "Thanks must go to the teachers,  for all theyre help throughout the competition.  Also Wes Gregg and  Keith Quigley for helping to referee the tournament.  Finally, Id also like to thank the Primary Schools league committee and in particular Peter McIlwaine for theyre help behind the scenes.  Hopefully we will be able to make this competition bigger and better for next year!"

As well as the winners trophy, there was one extra award on the day for player of the tournament which was sponsored by Moyola Park FC.  It deservedly went to Emma Stewart from Desertmartin P.S. for her effort, skill and attitude throughout the whole event.  The award was decided by all the referees on the day.

So the primary schools football comes to an end for 2007 and we all wish Spires Integrated P.S. good luck for the finals and look forward to next years competition.
